五性

The five different natures as grouped by the [lang id =1028]法相宗 Dharmalakṣana sect; of these the first and second, while able to attain to non-return to mortality, are unable to reach Buddhahood; of the fourth some may, others may not reach it; the fifth will be reborn as devas or men:

(1) (sa) śrāvakas for arhats;

(2) pratyekabuddhas for (sa) pratyekabuddha-hood;

(3) bodhisattvas for Buddhahood;

(4) indefinite;

(5) outsiders who have not the Buddha mind. The <Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment> [lang id =1028]圓覺經 has another group, i. e. the natures of

(1) ordinary good people;

(2) (sa) śrāvakas and (sa) pratyekabuddhas;

(3) bodhisattvas;

(4) indefinite;

(5) heretics.

﹝出華嚴經隨疏演義鈔﹞ 〔一、 定性聲聞〕， 因果不易， 名曰定性， 聞佛聲教而得覺悟名曰聲聞， 謂惟習聲聞之因， 而證聲聞之果， 更不進求佛道， 是名定性聲聞也。 〔二、 定性緣覺〕， 謂觀因緣生滅之法， 覺悟真空之理， 故曰緣覺。 謂唯習緣覺之因， 而證緣覺之果， 更不進求佛道， 是名定性緣覺也。 〔三、 菩薩性〕， 菩薩， 梵語具云菩提薩埵， 華言覺有情。 謂菩薩悲智雙運， 冤親等觀， 廣利眾生， 證菩提果， 是名菩薩性也。 〔四、 不定性〕， 謂遇緣熏習， 修行不定， 若近聲聞而習聲聞法， 若近緣覺而習緣覺法， 若近菩薩而習菩薩法， 各隨所習而成其性， 是名不定性也。 〔五、 無種性〕， 無種者， 無善種也。 謂人撥無因果， 不受化度， 甘溺生死， 不求解脫， 是名無種性也。 （撥者， 絕也。 ）

法相宗將一切眾生的根機， 分為五類， 叫做五性。 一、 有可修成阿羅漢果的無漏種子者， 名定性聲聞。 二、 有可修成辟支佛的無漏種子者， 名定性緣覺。 三、 有可修成佛果的無漏種子者， 名定性菩薩。 四、 兼有以上二種或三種的無漏種子， 則將來所證之位， 遇緣成熟， 並不一定證何種果者， 名不定性。 五、 並無以上三乘的無漏種子， 但有可修成人天果的有漏種子者， 名為無性。
